Case Study: How a “Cheap” Concrete Driveway Became a Costly Repair

Concrete work often looks fine on the day it’s poured.
Problems usually show up months later — cracking, sinking, ponding water, and edges breaking away.
This case study shows exactly what can go wrong when shortcuts are taken, and how CWG NSW delivered a long-term fix.
The Project
Location: Mascot, Sydney (residential property)
Scope: Existing concrete driveway replacement
Issue: Severe cracking, water pooling, and uneven levels less than 2 years after installation
The homeowner originally chose a low-priced quote to save money. Unfortunately, the result was a driveway that failed far earlier than expected.
What Went Wrong
After inspecting the driveway, several issues were immediately identified:
❌ Poor Base Preparation
Inadequate excavation depth
No proper compaction
Soft ground left beneath the slab
This caused the concrete to settle unevenly over time.
❌ Insufficient Reinforcement
Lightweight mesh placed directly on the ground
No bar chairs or supports
Mesh ended up at the bottom of the slab
Without reinforcement in the correct position, the concrete had very little resistance to cracking.
❌ Incorrect Thickness & Falls
Slab thickness varied significantly
Poor falls caused water to pool near the garage
Water ponding accelerates deterioration and creates slip hazards.
❌ No Curing
Concrete left to dry naturally
No curing compound or protection
This reduced the final strength of the slab and increased shrinkage cracking.
The CWG NSW Solution
CWG NSW was engaged to remove and rebuild the driveway properly.
✔ Step 1: Full Demolition & Assessment
Existing slab removed
Subgrade inspected and reworked
Unsuitable material removed
✔ Step 2: Correct Base Preparation
Proper excavation depth achieved
Compacted road base installed in layers
Levels and drainage re-established
✔ Step 3: Proper Reinforcement
Correctly specified mesh installed
Reinforcement supported on bar chairs
Adequate concrete cover achieved
✔ Step 4: Controlled Concrete Pour
Correct slab thickness maintained
Falls set away from the garage
Professional finishing to suit driveway use
✔ Step 5: Proper Curing
Concrete cured to achieve design strength
Surface protected during early strength gain
The Result
✔ Crack-free driveway
✔ Correct drainage — no ponding water
✔ Strong, durable slab
✔ Clean, professional finish
✔ Long-term performance
What Homeowners Can Learn from This Case
✔ Cheap quotes often mean shortcuts
✔ What’s under the concrete matters most
✔ Reinforcement must be positioned correctly
✔ Curing is not optional
✔ Repairs usually cost more than doing it right once
